WhatsApp is adding parental controls for teen accounts. You can decide who adds your teen to groups, who sees their Status and their profile picture, whose Status they can see, how they use channels, and what Meta AI is allowed to give them. All of it sits behind a PIN that you set, so your teen needs your approval to change anything.
The part you will probably use most is the group alerts. You can get a notification when your teen joins a group, when they leave one, and when a group they are in grows to 30, 100, or 250 members. A group of five classmates and a group of 250 people are two different rooms, and now you find out when one turns into the other.
There is also a content setting for Meta AI, the AI you chat with inside WhatsApp. You can leave the default 13+ setting, or pick the stricter “Limited Content” option, which also turns off features built on private processing, like incognito chat and message summaries.
Three decisions to make once:
- Set the PIN, and keep it somewhere your teen will not find it. Everything else depends on it.
- Pick the group size that gets you a notification. 30 is for knowing early, 250 is for knowing only when it is big.
- Choose between 13+ and “Limited Content” for Meta AI, and tell your teen which one you picked and why.
One thing these controls do not give you. You still cannot read your teen’s chats. WhatsApp says messages and calls stay end to end encrypted and no one can see them. You are shaping who can reach your teen and what Meta AI hands them, not what is said inside a conversation. And you can turn the whole thing off whenever you want.
