This Robot Can Handle Any Object You Give It

A new robot called Eka can pick up almost anything you put in front of it. From chicken nuggets to lightbulbs to fragile glass, this robotic claw adapts to whatever it touches without breaking things.

Most factory robots today can only do one specific job. They’re programmed to grab the same part over and over again. But Eka is different – it figures out how to handle new objects on its own, just like your hand does when you pick up something for the first time.

The ChatGPT Moment for Robots

Tech experts think this could be as big as when ChatGPT made AI writing suddenly work for everyone. For years, robots have been clumsy and limited. They could build cars or stack boxes, but couldn’t handle the messy, unpredictable work that humans do every day.

Eka uses AI similar to ChatGPT, but instead of understanding words, it understands shapes and textures. The robot watches objects through cameras, then decides how much pressure to use and where to grab. It can gently pick up an egg or firmly grip a wrench.

The company behind Eka says restaurants could use it to prep food, warehouses could have it sort packages, and factories could get robots that switch between different tasks throughout the day.

What’s Next

Eka isn’t available yet, but the company plans to start testing it with businesses next year. If it works as promised, we might finally see robots that can handle the weird, unpredictable jobs that have stumped machines for decades.
