Target just dropped a massive Pokémon collection with over 100 items, from clothes to tech accessories. The twist? It was designed by actual Pokémon superfans inside the company, including a Target vice president who’s obsessed with the franchise.
This isn’t just another brand collaboration. Target scored the only official U.S. retail partnership for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, and they’re treating it like the cultural moment it is. Even Joe Jonas is the face of the campaign.
Back to the Beginning
Here’s what makes this collection special: instead of trying to cram in all 1,025 Pokémon that exist today, Target went full nostalgia. They focused only on the original 151 creatures from the very first games, Pokémon Red and Blue from 1996.
Gigi Guerra, Target’s vice president of marketing and self-described die-hard fan, led the project. Her team asked themselves: “If you took a time machine back to 1996, what would be there?” The answer was the Kanto region and those iconic original Pokémon that started the global phenomenon.
The timing makes sense. While newer Pokémon games are breaking records – Scarlet and Violet sold 10 million copies in three days – the original games still hold the strongest nostalgic pull for both longtime fans and newcomers.
What’s Next
The collection launches in May and could help Target boost sales, which dropped 1.7% last year. If superfans designed it for superfans, this might be the rare brand collaboration that actually gets the details right.
