SpaceX Rival Plans Missile Defense Satellites in Space

A startup called Golden Dome wants to put missile-catching satellites in orbit around Earth. The company plans to build spacecraft that can shoot down enemy missiles while they’re still climbing into space, before they become harder to stop.

This sounds like science fiction, but Golden Dome has some serious backing. They’re working with major defense contractors and have caught the attention of military officials who worry about threats from countries like North Korea and Iran.

Space-Based Star Wars

The idea isn’t new – President Reagan proposed something similar in the 1980s called “Star Wars.” But the technology wasn’t ready then, and the costs were enormous. Golden Dome thinks modern satellites and rockets have finally made space-based missile defense possible.

The company’s satellites would orbit Earth and watch for missile launches. When they spot a threat, they’d fire interceptors to destroy missiles during their most vulnerable moment – right after launch when they’re moving slowly and full of fuel.

But there’s a big catch. Golden Dome’s CEO admits the whole project depends on making it cheap enough to actually build. “If boost-phase intercept from space is not affordable and scalable, we will not produce it,” the company said.

What Happens Next

Golden Dome is still in early testing phases, working on proving their technology works before building anything for space. Even if successful, it would take years to deploy enough satellites to provide meaningful protection. The bigger question is whether the military will pay for what could become one of the most expensive defense projects ever attempted.
