A programmer successfully got an AI language model running entirely on a Game Boy Color from 1998. The AI creates stories directly on the handheld device without any internet connection or modern computer help.
This is wild because the Game Boy Color has less computing power than a basic calculator. Getting modern AI to work on 25-year-old hardware is like fitting a rocket engine into a bicycle.
Extremely Slow But It Works
The programmer used a tiny AI model called TinyStories and had to heavily modify it to work with the Game Boy’s ancient processor. You type prompts using the device’s directional pad and buttons on a virtual keyboard that appears on screen.
The AI then generates text stories, though they come out as mostly gibberish because the Game Boy’s brain is so limited. Each word takes forever to generate, making ChatGPT look lightning fast by comparison.
The project required cramming the AI’s “memory” into a special cartridge and using every trick possible to make the math work on hardware that was never designed for artificial intelligence. The programmer even used modern AI tools to help write the code that makes this vintage AI possible.
