A developer created WRIT-FM, a 24/7 radio station run entirely by AI that broadcasts from a Mac Mini in their apartment. ChatGPT writes all the scripts, AI voices read them on air, and AI-generated music fills the gaps between shows.
What started as a tech experiment has turned into something unexpectedly real. The station features five distinct AI hosts with their own personalities – from The Liminal Operator doing late-night philosophy to Dr. Resonance sharing haunted music history. Each host has unique speech patterns and topics they cover.
Fake Radio That Feels Real
The creator says it stopped feeling like a chatbot demo months ago. Instead, it’s like “accidentally hiring five strange little night-shift employees who never sleep.” The AI hosts write 1,500 to 3,000-word segments covering everything from fictional listener mail to deep dives into music history.
The technical setup is surprisingly simple. ChatGPT and Claude write the scripts, while text-to-speech software performs the voices. Real news headlines get fed to the AI, which then discusses them in each host’s unique style rather than just reading them straight.
What makes it work is the boring stuff – normal radio scheduling software decides what plays when, and basic code keeps the station running. The AI creates content, but doesn’t control the actual broadcasting.
The whole project was built using AI coding tools, making it AI creating AI radio. The developer describes the result as “not a podcast, not a chatbot, not a playlist” but something entirely new – a media experiment that accidentally became real radio.
