New Tech Will Scan Your Face to Check Your Age Online

Companies are rolling out face-scanning technology that guesses your age to keep kids off adult websites and apps. The systems use your phone’s camera to analyze facial features and determine if you’re old enough to access certain content.

This matters because governments worldwide are demanding better age verification online. Social media platforms, dating apps, and adult content sites all face pressure to prove their users are actually adults. Traditional methods like entering your birthday are too easy to fake.

Your Phone Becomes the Bouncer

The new systems work by scanning your face with your phone’s camera, similar to unlocking your device with Face ID. The software analyzes bone structure, wrinkles, and other features to estimate age. Some companies are also testing “age keys” – digital certificates stored on your device that prove you’re over 18 without revealing your exact age or identity.

The technology aims to be more private than current methods. Instead of uploading personal documents like driver’s licenses to websites, the age check happens on your own device. Your face data never leaves your phone, and websites only get a simple “yes” or “no” answer about your age.

But users are skeptical. Many worry about accuracy – the systems sometimes guess wrong, especially for people who look younger or older than their actual age. Others don’t trust companies with any biometric data, even if it stays on their device.

Expect to see these age checks appearing on major platforms within the next year as new laws take effect.
