A Chinese company called Gestala just raised $21 million to build technology that reads brain signals. The startup is only two months old, making this the biggest early investment China’s brain-computer industry has ever seen.
This is remarkable because most startups take years to raise this kind of money. Brain-computer interfaces are devices that let your thoughts control computers, phones, or medical equipment without moving your hands.
Racing Against Elon Musk
Gestala is jumping into a field dominated by Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which recently put brain chips in human patients. Chinese investors clearly believe their homegrown companies can compete with American brain tech.
The technology works by placing tiny sensors near your brain that detect electrical signals when you think about moving or typing. These signals get translated into commands for external devices. Right now, it’s mainly used to help paralyzed patients control wheelchairs or type messages.
China has been pushing hard to catch up in brain-computer research. The government sees this technology as strategically important, especially as tensions with the US make accessing American tech harder.
What’s Next
Gestala will use the money to hire researchers and build prototypes. Don’t expect to control your smartphone with thoughts anytime soon – the technology is still experimental and focused on medical uses. But this huge investment shows China is serious about not falling behind in the race to connect brains and computers.
