Netflix Tests First Movie Made With Unreal Engine 5

Netflix just released a teaser for “Rogue Trooper,” which could become the first major movie made entirely with Unreal Engine 5. The streaming giant is betting that video game technology can create Hollywood-quality films at a fraction of the cost.

This matters because making movies is ridiculously expensive. A typical Netflix action movie costs $50-100 million. But Unreal Engine 5 – the same software that makes those ultra-realistic video games – can create photorealistic scenes without building physical sets or hiring hundreds of crew members.

Game Graphics Meet Hollywood

Unreal Engine 5 already powers games that look like movies. Epic Games, who makes the software, has been pushing Hollywood studios to use it for years. Disney used it for some Star Wars shows, but never for an entire feature film.

The technology lets directors create any location instantly – alien worlds, historical cities, or impossible landscapes. Actors perform in front of massive LED screens showing these digital worlds in real-time, so they can actually see what they’re acting against.

What This Could Change

If “Rogue Trooper” looks as good as traditional movies, expect a flood of game-engine films. Studios could pump out high-quality content faster and cheaper than ever before. Netflix has been struggling with rising production costs, so this could be their answer to making more shows without breaking the bank.

The movie adapts a British comic book about a super-soldier on an alien planet – perfect for showing off digital world-building.
