Microsoft just launched an AI assistant built specifically for lawyers that works inside Word documents. The new Legal Agent can review contracts, track document changes, and handle legal negotiations without lawyers having to teach it how law firms work.
This is Microsoft’s first AI tool designed for one profession instead of everyone. Most AI assistants like ChatGPT try to help with everything from writing emails to planning vacations. But lawyers have very specific needs that generic AI often gets wrong.
Real Legal Work, Not Generic Help
The Legal Agent follows actual legal workflows instead of guessing what lawyers want. It knows how to review contracts, spot important changes between document versions, and track negotiation history. Microsoft worked with law firms to understand exactly how legal teams operate day-to-day.
The AI can handle complex legal documents that would confuse regular AI assistants. Instead of just answering questions about a contract, it can actively help edit and improve legal language while following proper legal procedures.
This marks a shift toward profession-specific AI tools. Rather than building one AI for everyone, tech companies are starting to create specialized assistants for doctors, accountants, engineers, and other professionals who have unique workflows.
What’s Next
Microsoft plans to expand this approach to other professions if lawyers adopt the Legal Agent successfully. Other tech companies are watching closely to see if specialized AI tools work better than general-purpose assistants. Law firms that try the new tool will help determine whether the future of AI is one smart assistant for everyone or many specialized helpers for different jobs.
