McDonald’s AI Drive-Thru Orders Ice Cream With Bacon

McDonald’s AI Drive-Thru Orders Ice Cream With Bacon

McDonald’s quietly ended its AI voice ordering test at drive-thrrus after two years of hilarious failures. The system was supposed to take your order faster, but customers shared videos of it adding bacon to ice cream and ordering hundreds of chicken nuggets instead.

The AI couldn’t handle basic requests like “no pickles” and often misunderstood customers completely. One viral TikTok showed someone trying to order a vanilla cone, only to have the AI suggest adding bacon bits on top.

When Robots Can’t Handle Fast Food

McDonald’s partnered with IBM in 2021 to test voice AI at over 100 locations. The idea seemed smart – let computers take orders while humans focus on cooking. But the technology wasn’t ready for real customers speaking different accents, mumbling, or kids screaming in the backseat.

The AI also struggled with McDonald’s ever-changing menu and couldn’t adapt when items were sold out. Staff had to constantly step in to fix orders, making the process slower than before.

Other fast food chains like White Castle and Wendy’s are still testing similar AI systems. McDonald’s says they’re looking for new technology partners, but many customers hope they stick with humans who actually understand “hold the pickles.”
