AltStore PAL, an alternative app store for iPhones in Europe and Japan, just linked up with social media platforms like Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky. Now people can like and interact with apps directly from their social feeds.
This is pretty wild because it’s the first time an app store has connected with social media this way. Instead of just browsing apps in a boring store interface, you can discover new apps through your regular social media scrolling.
Social Shopping for Apps
AltStore PAL exists because Apple was forced to allow other app stores in Europe and Japan due to new tech regulations. It’s been trying to stand out from Apple’s massive App Store, which has millions of apps and billions of users.
The connection works through something called “federation” – basically letting different platforms talk to each other. When app developers choose to participate, their apps show up on AltStore’s website where people from Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky can like them and leave comments.
This could change how people find apps. Instead of searching through categories in an app store, you might discover your next favorite app because a friend liked it on Threads, similar to how people share YouTube videos or news articles.
What’s Next
AltStore PAL is still tiny compared to Apple’s App Store, but this social media integration could help it grow. If it works well, expect other alternative app stores to copy this idea. Apple probably isn’t thrilled about apps getting discovered outside their ecosystem.
