Google’s AI Workers Form Union to Block Military Projects

Workers at Google’s DeepMind AI lab in the UK voted to form a union, hoping to stop the company from letting militaries use their artificial intelligence technology. The move puts Google employees directly at odds with their own company’s business deals.

This is a rare case of tech workers organizing specifically over how their AI creations get used. Most unions focus on pay or working conditions, but DeepMind staff are worried about their smart computer programs being turned into weapons or surveillance tools.

When Your Own Creation Becomes the Problem

Google’s DeepMind makes some of the world’s most advanced AI systems. These programs can recognize images, understand speech, and solve complex problems faster than humans. But the same technology that helps you search for cat videos could also help militaries track targets or analyze battlefield footage.

The UK workers aren’t just worried about hypothetical future deals. Google has already worked with the US military on Project Maven, which used AI to analyze drone footage. That project sparked massive employee protests in 2018, and Google eventually didn’t renew the contract.

Now DeepMind workers want a formal say in these decisions through their union. They’re essentially telling Google: “We built this technology, and we should have a voice in how it’s used.”

What’s Next

The union will likely push for policies that give workers veto power over military contracts. Google will have to decide whether to negotiate with the union or risk more internal conflicts. Other tech companies are watching closely, since their own AI teams might follow DeepMind’s lead.
