Google’s AI Can Now Read Your Gmail and Photos

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to all US users, letting its AI assistant dig through your Gmail, Google Photos, and other Google apps to give you personalized answers.

This means Google’s AI can do things like find that restaurant recommendation buried in your emails, spot specific people in your photo library, or remind you about events mentioned in your messages. It’s like having a digital assistant that actually knows your life.

Your Digital Life, AI Organized

Personal Intelligence works by connecting Google’s AI to all the Google services you already use. Previously, this feature was limited to a small group of testers, but now anyone in the US can turn it on.

The AI can answer questions like “What was the name of that hotel my friend recommended?” by scanning through your Gmail conversations. Or it might remind you about upcoming trips by reading your confirmation emails and matching them with photos you’ve taken.

Google says the AI processes this information on your device when possible, meaning your personal data isn’t always sent to Google’s servers. But critics worry about giving any company’s AI this much access to private information.

What’s Next

Google plans to expand Personal Intelligence to more countries throughout 2024. The feature is optional – you have to actively turn it on in your Google settings. Other tech giants like Apple and Microsoft are working on similar personal AI features, setting up a race to see who can make the most helpful digital assistant.
