Google Photos users can now turn off the company’s AI-powered search feature after months of complaints. The tech giant added a toggle switch that lets people choose between the old keyword search and the new AI system called ‘Ask Photos.’
The AI feature was supposed to make finding photos easier by letting you ask questions in plain English, like “show me photos from my beach vacation last summer.” But many users found it confusing and less accurate than simply typing keywords.
Not Everyone Wants AI Help
Google rolled out Ask Photos earlier this year as part of its push to add AI to everything. The feature uses the same technology behind ChatGPT to understand what you’re looking for in your photo library. You could ask it complex questions like “find photos of my dog playing in the park” instead of just searching for “dog.”
But the reality didn’t match the promise. Users complained that the AI often misunderstood their requests or showed irrelevant photos. Many people preferred the simple keyword search that worked predictably. The complaints got loud enough that Google decided to give users a choice.
What’s Next
The toggle switch now appears on the Google Photos search screen, letting you pick your preferred experience. This marks a rare step backward for Google, which usually pushes new features whether users want them or not. It suggests the company is learning that not every AI upgrade is automatically better, and sometimes people just want things to work the way they always have.
