Google Home just got a major brain upgrade. The smart speaker can now handle complex, multi-step requests and combine different tasks in a single voice command.
This is a big deal because most smart speakers struggle with anything beyond simple commands. Ask Alexa to “turn off the lights and set an alarm for 7am” and you might get confused responses. Google’s new Gemini 3.1 AI changes that game entirely.

The upgrade means you can now say something like “dim the living room lights, start my evening playlist, and remind me to call mom in an hour” – and Google Home will actually understand and do all three things. Previous versions of smart speakers would often get tripped up by these combo requests, forcing you to break them into separate commands.
Google’s Gemini 3.1 AI is the same technology powering their chatbot, but now it’s living inside your smart speaker. The company says this makes the assistant much better at interpreting what you actually want, even when you phrase things in a conversational way rather than using specific command words.
What’s Next
This puts Google ahead of Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri in the smart home race. Expect other companies to rush out similar updates to their voice assistants. For Google Home users, the update is rolling out automatically – no setup required.
