Google and SpaceX are talking about building computer data centers that orbit Earth in space. The idea is to move some of the massive computing power needed for AI away from the ground and into orbit around our planet.
This sounds like science fiction, but there’s real logic behind it. Space offers unlimited room to expand, no need for expensive real estate, and better cooling since space is naturally cold. Plus, orbital data centers could beam internet directly to anywhere on Earth without needing cables or cell towers.
The Sky-High Price Tag
There’s one major problem: cost. Launching anything into space is incredibly expensive right now. Building a single data center in orbit would cost hundreds of times more than building one on Earth. Even SpaceX’s cheaper rockets haven’t made space construction affordable yet.
But both companies are betting that launch costs will keep falling. SpaceX has already cut rocket costs by 90% with reusable rockets. Google needs massive computing power for AI like ChatGPT competitors, and traditional data centers are running out of room and using enormous amounts of electricity.
The talks are still early, and no concrete plans have been announced. But if this works, your Netflix stream or Google search could someday be processed by computers floating 250 miles above your head. Other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft are likely watching these discussions closely, since whoever controls space-based computing could have a huge advantage in the AI race.
