Archive of Our Own (AO3), the world’s largest fanfiction website, officially ended its 17-year beta testing phase this week. The site hosts millions of fan-written stories based on everything from Harry Potter to Marvel movies.
This might be the longest beta period in internet history. Most websites test for weeks or months before going live. AO3 has been serving millions of users since 2009 while technically still calling itself unfinished.
Better Late Than Never
AO3 started as a passion project by fans who wanted a safe space to share their creative writing. The Organization for Transformative Works, the nonprofit that runs the site, kept the beta label because they were constantly adding new features and improvements.
The site now hosts over 12 million works in dozens of languages. Writers can tag their stories with incredibly specific categories, making it easy for readers to find exactly what they want. Unlike other platforms, AO3 doesn’t run ads or sell user data.
The beta label removal doesn’t mean major changes are coming. The site will keep operating exactly as before, just without the “beta” tag that confused newcomers for nearly two decades.
What’s Next
AO3 plans to keep improving the site based on user feedback. The announcement hints at continued feature updates, though they didn’t specify what’s coming next. For the millions of fanfiction readers and writers who use AO3 daily, this milestone mostly confirms what they already knew: their favorite site isn’t going anywhere.
