Music streaming service Deezer revealed that 44% of all new songs uploaded to their platform are now created by artificial intelligence. The French company says most of these AI-generated tracks are being used to commit streaming fraud.
This surge in AI music represents a massive shift in how songs are being created and uploaded. While AI tracks flood the platform, they’re not actually popular with real listeners – they account for only a tiny fraction of actual streams from humans.
The Fraud Problem
Deezer discovered that most AI-generated songs aren’t uploaded by aspiring musicians hoping to make it big. Instead, scammers are using AI to quickly create thousands of fake tracks, then using bots to artificially inflate play counts. This fake streaming generates royalty payments that get split between the fraudsters.
The company has started removing these fraudulent AI tracks and blocking the accounts behind them. Deezer can detect AI-generated music using special software that identifies telltale signs of artificial creation.
Streaming fraud isn’t new, but AI has made it much easier and cheaper to pull off. Previously, scammers needed to hire musicians or buy existing songs. Now they can generate unlimited tracks in minutes.
What’s Next
Deezer plans to get more aggressive about detecting and removing AI fraud. Other streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music are likely dealing with similar problems. Expect new rules and better detection systems as the music industry figures out how to handle the AI revolution while protecting real artists from getting cheated out of royalties.
