ChatGPT’s New Memory Feature Erases Your Detailed Notes

ChatGPT just rolled out a new “dreaming” feature that’s supposed to improve how it remembers things about you. Instead, it’s turning your carefully saved details into generic summaries.

The problem is pretty frustrating. If you spent time teaching ChatGPT specific preferences – like which translations of Greek texts you prefer or your detailed work methods – the new system dumps all that nuance for bland, useless summaries.

Your Details Are Getting Mushed

One user discovered their detailed notes about studying Plato got reduced from specific instructions about Greek translations and interpretation methods to just “User has shown interest in careful readings of Plato.” That’s like having your detailed recipe notes replaced with “User likes to cook.”

OpenAI calls this an “upgrade,” but it’s enabled by default and many users are discovering their personalized ChatGPT suddenly doesn’t remember the specifics that made it useful. The company’s own timeline shows this “dreaming” feature is meant to completely replace the old memory system by 2026.

There’s still a way to get your old memories back, but you need to act fast. Go to Settings, then Personalization, then look for “Saved memories” (or “Memory summary” depending on your interface). Click the link under “Saved memories” – not “Manage” – to restore your legacy memories.

What’s Next

OpenAI plans to remove this recovery option soon without announcing it. If you rely on ChatGPT remembering specific details about your work or preferences, you might want to back up those memories now before the option disappears completely.
