Canva just launched Magic Layers, an AI tool that can take any flat image and break it apart into fully editable pieces. The tool extracts text, objects, and backgrounds into separate layers you can change individually.
This solves a massive headache for anyone who works with images. Until now, if you had a finished design with a typo or wanted to swap the background, you’d need to find the original file, rebuild it in Photoshop, or start over completely.
Breaking Down the Image Vault
Magic Layers uses Canva’s own AI design model to understand how images are put together. It looks at any picture and sees the skeleton underneath – separating foreground subjects from backgrounds and recognizing text as actual words, not just colored shapes.
When you upload an image, whether it’s from AI generation or an old file on your computer, the tool dissects every element perfectly. Text becomes a live text box you can edit, spell-check, or translate. Visual objects like products or graphics become independent pieces you can move, resize, recolor, or delete entirely.
“Most AI outputs are fixed, really flat things, and they’re not easy to edit,” says Canva’s Chief Product Officer Cameron Adams. “The model identifies everything in the frame and converts it into native Canva objects.”
This means no more living with 80% solutions or endless re-prompting to fix small details. You can now resurrect and tweak any image sitting on your hard drive, turning locked pixel vaults into flexible design projects.
