Canva’s AI Can Now Split Pictures Into Editable Pieces

Canva just launched a tool that takes any flat picture and magically breaks it into separate pieces you can edit. Their new “Magic Layers” feature can look at an image and automatically separate text, objects, and graphics so you can move or change each part individually.

This is a big deal because normally when you have a picture or design, it’s just one flat file. If you want to change the text or move an object, you’re stuck. Now Canva’s AI does the hard work of figuring out what’s what in your image.

Like Having X-Ray Vision for Pictures

The tool works on both regular photos and AI-generated images. Say you have a poster with text over a background – Magic Layers will identify the text as one piece, the background as another, and any other objects as separate layers. You can then edit each piece without affecting the rest.

Canva is rolling this out in beta to users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia first. The company says it preserves the original layout while giving you full control over individual elements.

What This Means for Everyone

This could change how people work with images. Instead of starting from scratch when you want to tweak a design, you can just grab any existing image and break it apart. It’s especially useful for small businesses who need to quickly modify marketing materials or social media posts without hiring a designer.
