BMW Replaces Its Luxury 7 Series With Three New Models

BMW just announced a complete overhaul of its flagship 7 Series luxury sedan for 2027. The German automaker is scrapping the current model and launching three different versions to compete with Tesla and other electric car makers.

This marks BMW’s biggest bet yet on giving customers choice in how their luxury car gets powered. While many automakers are going all-electric, BMW is hedging its bets by offering something for everyone.

Three Cars, Three Power Sources

The new 2027 BMW 7 Series will come in three flavors. First, a fully electric version to compete directly with Tesla’s Model S and Mercedes’ electric luxury cars. Second, a traditional gas-powered model with BMW’s inline-six engine for customers who aren’t ready to go electric. Third, a plug-in hybrid that combines both gas and electric power.

BMW is also equipping all three versions with a completely new battery system, even the gas-only model. This suggests the traditional version will have some electric features, possibly for powering the car’s luxury amenities without running the main engine.

The timing puts BMW right in the middle of the luxury electric car wars. Tesla dominates the space now, but traditional luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are fighting back with their own premium electric vehicles.
