Away Creates Luggage With Brakes For Train Travel

Away just launched a new line of luggage specifically designed for train travel, complete with wheel brakes to stop your suitcase from rolling away on moving trains. The bags also open vertically so you can grab items without laying them flat in tight train aisles.

This partnership with Amtrak tackles one of the most annoying parts of train travel – wrestling with regular suitcases in cramped spaces while the train rocks back and forth.

Suitcases That Actually Stay Put

The standout feature is surprisingly simple: brakes. Away designed a wheel brake system that locks both wheels and the fork mechanism, so your bag won’t drift away when you’re standing in a crowded train corridor waiting to get off. The brake switch sits right on top where you can easily reach it.

The bags also solve another train problem – getting stuff out of your suitcase. Instead of the usual horizontal zip that forces you to lay the bag flat, these have a vertical front opening. You can grab your laptop or clothes while the bag stays upright in narrow aisles.

Away made the bags as compact as possible while maximizing storage space inside. They even created removable “closet” inserts with hooks and compartments that you can hang up in tiny sleeper cars, so you don’t have to live out of an open suitcase.

What’s Next

The Topside collection comes in three sizes from $375 to $475. As Amtrak expands high-speed rail service, expect more companies to design products specifically for train travel instead of just airplanes.
