Apple just released the second generation of their premium AirPods Max headphones, and tech reviewers are calling them a tough sell. The new $549 headphones offer great sound quality but come with the same frustrating problems as the original version.
The AirPods Max 2 deliver excellent audio and Apple’s signature sleek design. But at $549, they’re competing against headphones that cost half the price and often perform just as well. That’s a hard pill to swallow when you can get similar quality elsewhere.
Same Problems, Higher Price
Apple kept many of the annoying issues from the first AirPods Max. The headphones still use a Lightning port instead of the newer USB-C that most devices use now. They’re also heavy and come with that weird “purse” case that doesn’t actually protect them properly.
The sound quality is undeniably good, and the noise cancellation works well. If you’re deep in Apple’s ecosystem and money isn’t a concern, they’ll work seamlessly with your iPhone and Mac. But most people can find better value with Sony, Bose, or other brands that offer similar features for much less money.
What’s Next
Apple seems to be betting that their brand loyalty will overcome the price concerns. But with so many excellent alternatives available, the AirPods Max 2 might end up being another premium product that only the most devoted Apple fans actually buy.
