American Girl is bringing back eight of its most beloved historical dolls for the brand’s 40th anniversary. The company will sell characters like Addy Walker, who escapes slavery, and Molly McIntire, who lives through World War II.
This move comes after decades of complaints that American Girl lost its way. The brand used to be known for teaching kids about history through difficult but important stories. Now it’s trying to win back millennial moms who grew up with these dolls.
The Nostalgia Play
Mattel bought American Girl for $700 million and slowly retired the historical characters. They replaced them with modern dolls that looked like every other toy on the shelf. Sales suffered as parents who remembered the original magic stopped buying for their own kids.
The returning dolls include characters from 1764 to 1943, complete with their original outfits, accessories, and books. Even the packaging copies the 1986 design. “This collection is our love letter to the original fans,” says Jamie Cygielman from Mattel.
What Happens Next
The dolls are available for preorder now and ship in May. American Girl has posted five straight quarters of growth, but sales are still way below where they were in the mid-2010s. The big question is whether today’s kids will connect with stories about historical hardships the way their parents did, or if this is just expensive nostalgia for adults.
