Almost All of Elon Musk’s AI Team Has Quit

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has lost nearly all its founding team. Only one or two of the original 11 co-founders remain at the company after the latest departure this week.

This is a big deal because xAI launched just last year with huge ambitions to compete with ChatGPT and other major AI companies. When you lose 9 out of 11 founding members in such a short time, it raises serious questions about what’s happening behind the scenes.

The Revolving Door

Musk started xAI in July 2023, bringing together top AI researchers and engineers from companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The company’s goal was to build AI that could understand the universe and compete with the biggest names in artificial intelligence.

But keeping a team together has proven much harder than Musk expected. The co-founders weren’t random hires – these were experienced AI experts who helped shape the company’s direction from day one. Their departure suggests potential disagreements about the company’s future or working conditions.

xAI did manage to raise $6 billion from investors earlier this year and launched its Grok chatbot. But building successful AI requires consistent leadership and vision, which becomes difficult when your founding team keeps walking out the door.

What This Means

For now, xAI continues operating with Musk at the helm. But in the competitive AI world, talent is everything. Companies like OpenAI and Google are moving fast, and losing key people could put xAI further behind in the race to build better artificial intelligence.
