Walmart Puts Shopping Bot Inside ChatGPT After Checkout Flop

Walmart Puts Shopping Bot Inside ChatGPT After Checkout Flop

Walmart is putting its shopping assistant Sparky directly into ChatGPT and Google’s AI after their original checkout feature didn’t work out. The retail giant is taking a different approach to AI-powered shopping.

The move comes after OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature failed to catch on with customers. Instead of trying to build standalone shopping tools, Walmart decided to meet customers where they already are – inside popular AI chatbots.

Shopping Where People Already Chat

Walmart’s Sparky chatbot will now live inside ChatGPT and Google Gemini, letting people shop while they’re already asking AI questions. You could ask ChatGPT about dinner recipes, then immediately ask Sparky to order the ingredients from Walmart.

This represents a shift in how companies think about AI shopping. Rather than creating separate apps or features, retailers are embedding their services into the AI tools people use every day. It’s like having a Walmart employee sitting next to your favorite search engine.

The partnership shows how quickly companies are pivoting their AI strategies. What seemed like a good idea six months ago – standalone AI shopping features – is already being replaced by embedded experiences.

What’s Next

Expect more retailers to follow Walmart’s lead by putting their shopping bots inside popular AI platforms. The future of AI shopping might not be special apps, but invisible assistants that pop up exactly when you need them during regular conversations with ChatGPT or Google.
