A federal judge temporarily stopped the Trump administration from officially labeling AI company Anthropic as a supply chain risk. The decision means Anthropic can keep doing business normally without dealing with restrictions that were supposed to start next week.
The ruling is a big win for Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI chatbot that competes with ChatGPT. Being labeled a supply chain risk would have made it much harder for Anthropic to work with government agencies and some private companies.
Trump Takes Aim at AI Companies
The Trump administration has been cracking down on various tech companies, claiming they pose risks to national security. Anthropic found itself caught in this broader effort, even though the company was founded in San Francisco by former OpenAI executives.
Anthropic argued in court that the designation was unfair and would seriously hurt their business. The judge agreed there were enough questions about the process to pause it for now. This gives Anthropic time to fight the label in court.
The temporary block doesn’t mean Anthropic is in the clear forever. The administration could still pursue the designation through proper legal channels. But for now, Anthropic can focus on building AI tools instead of battling government restrictions. Other AI companies are watching closely to see if they might face similar challenges.
