Invisalign Uses More 3D Printers Than Anyone Else

Invisalign Uses More 3D Printers Than Anyone Else

Invisalign has quietly become the world’s biggest user of 3D printers. The company that makes clear braces now operates thousands of 3D printers to create custom aligners for millions of people.

This happened because every single Invisalign aligner is unique. Unlike regular braces that come in standard sizes, each aligner is made specifically for one person’s teeth at one stage of treatment. That means printing millions of custom plastic pieces every month.

The Plastic Expert Running the Show

Joe Hogan, Invisalign’s CEO, used to work in the plastics industry before joining the company. He’s the guy behind turning Invisalign into a 3D printing powerhouse. Hogan has some strong opinions about how people should use their aligners – he says you definitely shouldn’t eat while wearing them, and surprisingly, you don’t need to wear your retainers every single night after treatment.

The company prints so many aligners that they’ve had to build massive factories filled with 3D printers running 24/7. Each printer creates the molds used to shape the clear plastic aligners that gradually move your teeth.

What started as a dental product has accidentally made Invisalign one of the biggest players in 3D printing. They’re now printing more custom items than companies that actually sell 3D printers.

What This Means

Invisalign’s success shows how 3D printing works best for custom products. While most people think of 3D printing as a hobby or for prototypes, Invisalign proves it can work for mass production when every item needs to be different.
