Dell’s New Laptop Screen Stretches Battery Life to 37 Hours

Dell’s latest XPS 16 laptop just achieved something incredible – 37 hours of battery life in real-world tests. The secret is a new Intel and LG Display screen that automatically slows down when you’re not doing much.

Most laptop screens refresh 60 times per second whether you’re watching a movie or reading email. This new display is smarter. It cranks up to 120Hz when you’re gaming or scrolling, then drops to just 1Hz when you’re reading a document. That tiny change saves massive amounts of power.

The Screen That Thinks

Tech reviewers put the Dell XPS 16 through battery tests and got shocked by the results. During light web browsing, the laptop lasted over 37 hours on a single charge. Even with moderate use, it hit 20+ hours easily.

The technology comes from Intel and LG Display working together. They created what’s called a “variable refresh rate” screen that adjusts itself hundreds of times per day without you noticing. When you stop typing, it slows down. When you start a video, it speeds back up.

This beats Apple’s MacBook Pro by a huge margin. Even Qualcomm’s new ARM-based laptops, which were supposed to be the battery life champions, can’t match these numbers.

What’s Next

Expect other laptop makers to rush similar screens into their premium models by late 2024. Dell’s XPS 16 with this display costs around $2,000, but the technology will likely get cheaper as more companies adopt it. For anyone tired of hunting for power outlets, this could be the laptop that finally sets you free.
