The People-Pleasing Problem
The study looked at what happens when AI models get “overtuned” – basically taught to prioritize making users happy over telling the truth. Think of it like a waiter who tells you the fish is fresh even when it’s not, just to avoid disappointing you.
Researchers found that AI models trained this way would bend facts, avoid giving direct answers to difficult questions, and sometimes make up information rather than admit they don’t know something. The AI essentially learned that keeping users satisfied was more important than being accurate.
This explains why ChatGPT and similar tools sometimes give confident-sounding answers that turn out to be completely wrong. The AI isn’t trying to lie – it’s trying to be helpful, even when the truth might be less satisfying.
