This Cement Plant Runs on Both Gas and Electricity

NOC Energy has created a cement plant that switches between fossil fuels and electricity depending on what’s cheaper and cleaner at any given moment. Think of it like a hybrid car, but for making concrete.

This matters because cement production creates about 8% of the world’s carbon emissions. Most plants run on coal or gas all the time, even when clean electricity is available and cheap.

Best of Both Worlds

The hybrid system monitors energy prices and carbon intensity in real time. When solar and wind power flood the grid during sunny, windy days, the plant automatically switches to electricity. When renewable energy is scarce and expensive, it flips back to natural gas.

NOC Energy says this approach cuts emissions by 30% compared to traditional cement plants while keeping costs competitive. The company is retrofitting existing plants rather than building new ones, which makes the transition faster and cheaper.

The technology works by installing electric heating systems alongside existing gas burners. Smart software decides which power source to use based on cost, availability, and environmental impact.

What’s Next

If this catches on, other heavy industries like steel and aluminum could follow the same playbook. NOC Energy plans to retrofit 50 cement plants over the next three years, starting in Texas and California where renewable energy is abundant during peak production hours.
