US Military Plans to Follow NASA Back to the Moon

NASA is racing to put astronauts back on the Moon, but the US military is already planning their own lunar mission. Space Force officials say they need to protect American interests once we establish a permanent presence there.

This marks a major shift in how America thinks about space. For decades, NASA handled peaceful exploration while the military stayed focused on Earth’s orbit. Now they’re talking about extending military operations all the way to the Moon.

Space Gets Militarized

The push comes from growing competition with China and Russia, who are also planning Moon bases. Military leaders worry that other countries might try to claim valuable lunar territory or resources like rare metals and water ice.

“I just don’t want to get caught flat-footed when we start to have to protect US interests out there,” said one Space Force official. The military is particularly concerned about the Moon’s south pole, where NASA plans to build its first permanent base.

Unlike the 1960s Moon race, this time multiple countries are heading there to stay. China wants to build their own lunar research station by 2030. Russia is planning joint missions despite tensions on Earth.

What Happens Next

The military won’t send troops to the Moon anytime soon. Instead, they’re developing satellites and other technology to monitor lunar activity from afar. But as Moon colonies grow over the next decade, expect to see more talk about space security and protecting American lunar assets.
