The US Mint is releasing a new dime design that’s missing a key symbol of peace. The 2026 Emerging Liberty dime shows an eagle holding arrows for war, but removes the olive branches that traditionally represent peace.
This isn’t just about coin design. Critics say Trump is using America’s currency to send a message about his priorities, removing symbols of peace while keeping symbols of war.
Missing Olive Branches Tell a Story
The timing feels especially significant as conflicts continue overseas. The classic Roosevelt dime has always shown both war and peace symbols together – a torch for liberty, olive branches for peace, and oak branches for strength. The new design keeps the war arrows but drops the peace branches entirely.
Trump’s administration has been reshaping how America presents itself through official symbols. They’ve scrapped Biden-era plans for coins celebrating civil rights and voting rights, focusing instead on the founding era and American Revolution. The administration also ended the American Women Quarters program and hasn’t renewed it.
Even more telling: Trump has been rebranding government institutions, taking over the US Institute of Peace and pushing to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War – a change that could cost $2 billion.
What’s Next
The Emerging Liberty dime will temporarily replace Roosevelt dimes in 2026 for America’s 250th anniversary celebration. The Roosevelt design returns in 2027, but the symbolic message will already be sent through millions of coins in circulation.
